Guyana: The administration of Guyana denounces the act of agitation by the Venezuelan armed forces as a violation of the supremacy of Guyana over the air above its territory.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana wishes to notify that on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at around 13:20 hrs., two Venezuelan armies Sukhoi SU 30 fighter jets, overflew the group of Etering-bang and the air-strip at a very low height of 1500 feet. The fighter jets surrounded the location once before proceeding in an east direction.
The administration of Guyana denounces this latest act of agitation by the Venezuelan armed forces as a demolition of the sovereignty of Guyana over the air above its borders.
The Government wishes to remind that this recent hostility follows closely on the heels of (i) a Decree recently addressed by President Nicolas Maduro, which purports to discover a maritime territory for Venezuela which compasses Guyana’s territorial waters, EEZ, and continental shelf, as well as its land boundary west of the Essequibo River; (ii) the illegal interception and detention of two Guyanese fishing vessels and their crew in Guyana’s waters; and (iii) the resolutions of the Special Commission for the Defence of the “Guayana Esequiba” and Territorial Sovereignty which recommended the convening a meeting of this Special Commission to the Essequibo with the endorsement of the Venezuelan armed forces.
The intervention in our territory of the two Venezuelan fighter jets is a clear indication that the administration of Venezuela is prepared to use aggression and intimidation to accomplish what cannot be completed by legal means- the surrender by Guyana of its patrimony.
The administration of Guyana exhorts the Government of Venezuela, and its agents, to behave in a manner consistent with international law and firm neighborly relations.
The international community will be kept notified of all actions undertaken by Venezuela to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana and shaken the peace and security of the region.
