St Lucia: St Lucia Labour Party SLP, issued a statement regarding Prime Minister Allen Chastanet pushing the election beyond the five-year mark of 6 June 2021.
SLP stated, Prime Minister Allen Chastanet knows that he and his uncaring UWP are headed for a massive defeat when the election is called. His interview on the radio this week suggesting that he would push holding the election beyond the five-year mark of 6 June 2021. Why? He blames COVID-19, but the reality is, he is afraid of the people.
Since the global pandemic began, there have been successful elections held across CARICOM, including in Anguilla, Belize, Bermuda, Jamaica, Suriname, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and the Turks & Caicos Islands. Elections will be organised in the coming weeks in the Cayman Islands as well, SLP added.
Furthermore, SLP stated, Elections can be held safely during COVID-19 using PPE and social distancing. The reality is, the Prime Minister is afraid of the people because he knows his uncaring government has failed to provide people with a social safety net during the pandemic.
He has failed to put money in people’s pockets and food on the table to see people through. And, he knows that upon election, the SLP will do these things to help working people during difficult times, SLP stated.
SLP remarked, “Mr Prime Minister, stop hiding behind the pandemic. Call the election, now!”
A Facebook user commented, “He refused to lockdown and has repeatedly said we have to coexist with covid-19 so we can have an election.”
Another Facebook user commented The London mayor elections would be held on the 6 May 2021. I believed the pm is hiding behind COVID to call the elections.”
Earlier, SLP wrote that “Families are starving. Children have fallen years behind because they have no access to laptops. Teachers are frustrated.
Thousands continue to be unemployed with no economic stimulus from this Government. Many persons are facing eviction. Crime is at an all-time high. The police are demoralised. 61 COVID-19 related deaths, more than Barbados with a bigger population and more than the OECS combined.
We have a health crisis. Frontline workers are exhausted. We have an economic crisis. Yet Allen Chastanet’s uncaring UWP finds time to spread FAKE NEWS! First, he waved some document in Parliament, and now he spreads them through his surrogates. This man does not care about people and expects to win this election through LIES and PROPAGANDA.
