“Bold and Black,” read how Akilah Miller started loving herself

St Kitts and Nevis: A lot of inspiring stories come along in our day to day lives, which touches the core of people. A similar kind of bold, beautiful story breaking all the barriers and social norms is of 26-year-old Akilah Miller.

This is a story of a strong woman rising from depression. Read the below story of Miller in her own words.

As I celebrate 26 years of life, I’m also embracing 20 years of a unique side of me that can never be hidden or changed. Full of self-confidence and self-empowerment, I’ve decided to embrace this side of me because this is who I really am.

Many of you asked, many of you wondered, and a whole lot of you stopped and stared. Some of you may even be asking now, “was she always this bold?” No, she was not! Did I cry at times?? Yes, but I never allowed anyone to see or hear me, not even my mother. Was I teased in school???

Lol, I remember one time some me classmates even make a song on me. Boy, aye, if I was a weak one, I would have been dying from depression all now so. There was even a time in life where all I used to wear were long sleeves T’s; I even had all the colours, and I am sure some of you could remember always seeing me in T’s.

I went to different doctors, had multiple tests done, and I never seemed to get the right answers. I got tired; I said to mommy, “let’s leave it; I don’t care what people say and think at this point, I don’t care if it goes or stays.” And today, I’m happy with my decision. I’m proud of the person I was 10 years ago, 5 years ago and even prouder of the person I am today.

I am beautiful! I am bold! I am confident! I am self-driven! I am determined! I am fierce! I am Strong! I am a Black Woman! I am 26 year old Akilah Miller.
