Jamaican American Damian Williams to be the new United States Attorney of the Southern District of New York. The U.S. president Joe Biden nominated Damian Williams. The Southern District comprises of Manhattan, Westchester County, the Bronx and some various northern suburbs.
President Biden nominated Williams last August, but if he got selected, then William would be the first-ever Black person to be chosen for serving in the most important roles in the government of the U.S.
The office was gone behind many major governmental cases in recent years, which includes the case of Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation and recent inquiries into the Trump Organization.
A statement from the White House said, “The President has launched a comprehensive effort to take on the uptick in gun crime that has been taking place the last 18 months – putting more cops on the beat, supporting community prevention programs, and cracking down on illegal gun trafficking. Confirming U.S. Attorneys as the chief federal law enforcement officers in their district is important for these efforts.”
Damian Williams would be replacing the acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss, who was handling the top spot of the office as the former President Trump discharged the former Attorney Preet Bharara along with his successor named Geoffrey Berman.
Damian Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was an assistant attorney in the district. Once, he also worked as a law clerk for Merrick Garland in the U.S. Court of Appeals, the record according to the White House.
Williams is the son of Jamaican immigrant parents. Williams Graduated from Yale Law School. He also went to Harvard University, University of Cambridge.
His nomination is under waiting for the approval of the Senate. If confirmed, he would join Kristen Clarke, Susan Rice, and Vice President Kamala Harris as members of Jamaican heritage’s Biden- Harris administration.
