Tobago: The Tourism Authority has resumed all the western end beaches that were closed following the terrible shark incident that took place on Friday, 26th April 2024. The beaches have been made accessible to the public from 3rd May 2024 and have ensured the safety of all visitors from certain accidents in the near future.

The British tourist who became the victim of the shark attack was severely injured to his left arm, left leg, and stomach. He was later taken to the Scarborough General Hospital, where he was successfully treated, and was subsequently transported to the Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Florida, for further medical procedures.

This incident resulted in the closure of several beaches, which include Rocky Point, Mt. Irvine, Buccoo Beach, Grange Bay, Swallows, Pigeon Point, No Man’s Land, Store Bay, and Grafton Beach and Marine Park, ensuring the safety of all travellers.

The closure of the beaches resulted in a loss of the country’s economy. As in the last week, the beaches did not witness the arrival of any tourists due to them being shut by the Tobago Emergency Agency for the well-being of the visitors.

Along with that, the local citizens also faced loss in their business as they were not able to sell their locally produced goods and services. However, the tourism authority has stated that they are implementing measures in order to avoid such incidents in future so that it does not cause any harm or create a negative impact to the tourism sector of the country.

The tourism authority has also promised that they will implement all the measures in order to safeguard the lives of the citizens of the nation from the marine species.

Moreover, the Office of the Chief Secretary extended gratitude to the public, tourism stakeholders and the fishing community for their continuous support, understanding, patience and cooperation during the period of beach closure so that they could smoothly execute their security procedure to open the beaches timely.
