St Lucia: Man shot dead at Millennium Highway

Another murder case was reported on Saint Lucia. On Monday, a male was shot down by another at the Millennium Highway, near Coubaril.

According to the preliminary information, the locals multiple times heard shooting sounds. It is believed that the deceased was riding a scooter.

For now, the murdered individual has not been identified, and its cause is also unknown.

The investigation has been commenced, and police officers have blocked the highway. This blockage has forced the residents to find alternative routes to reach their destinations.

The law enforcement officials have been closely searching for a clue that might lead to the perpetrator or perpetrators.

So far, further details are awaited.

According to the Home Affairs Ministry of St Lucia, in 2021, the homicide rate of the island was 68.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Virginia Alter Poyotte, stated that it is ‘too many’ for a small island.

Dr Poyotte said that the authorities have to closely examine where and why the homicides are happening, the age group being murdered and the motive behind the killing. This will provide assistance to the lawmakers and police to understand the dynamics of the nation, as per the Minister of Home Affairs.

She claimed that COVID-19 had given a boost to the crime rate on the island as, during this time, people were dealing with a lot, like unemployment, which engaged them in illicit or criminal acts.
