Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: The charges were read against 31-year-old man who is remanded into the custody for the offence of conducting ‘Robbery with Violence’ in Rio Claro.

According to the police reports, the accused was identified as Neil Persad, who was also known as ‘Freedom.’ He was unemployed, with no fixed residence. A case was filed against him by a woman, who was robbed by Freedom.

The reports mentioned that the incident was occurred on April 16, 2024 at around 10:40 am when a woman was approached by a male suspect (Persad) at the transport hub, along the Naparima Mayaro Road in Rio Claro.

In due course of time, an assailant approached and threatened her for the money. The victim was scared and she told the police that the accused pulled her jersey and grabbed her. The suspect snatched the gold chain from around her neck, which was worth $2,000.

Following the robbery, Freedom escaped the crime spot and left her in terrible condition. A complaint was filed against the accused and a team of officers from the Rio Claro CID initiated their investigations.

The police managed to arrest Persad and recovered the gold chain from him. He appeared before a Master of the High Court, Master Shamada Shah, and was ordered to remain in police custody. Moreover, his bail was denied, and he will be sentenced on April 25, 2024.

Additionally, robbery incidents are increasing rapidly in Trinidad and Tobago. Recently, the police have arrested a 20-year-old Chaguanas man for the “Robbery with Violence”, in a mini-mart.

The robbery was conducted in a mini-mart, located at La Clave Street in Chaguanas, where the two cashiers were approached by the armed robbers, who allegedly took cigarettes, alcohol and cash in return of relieving the cashiers on duty.

Notably, two more civilians who visited the mart for shopping received injuries during the robbery at the place.

Such stances of crimes question the citizen’s security. Keeping this in mind, the authorities are asked to take stringent actions against the spike of criminal activities in the country.
