Castries: Saint Lucia’s fishermen received increased fuel rebates as promised by the government during the 2023/2024 budget address. The statement was made to enhance and support the country’s fisheries sector.

The immediate aim behind this initiative is to promote the sustainable living standards of the fishermen.

Notably, the eligible fishing vessel owners with valid licences with registered fishermen cooperatives will now receive a rebate of $2.50 per gallon instead of $1.50. The maximum rebate per vessel is fixed at 6000 gallons on a quarterly basis. This round of rebates covers quarterly payments from July to September, 2023.

As the fuel price increases all over the world, the project to implement fuel rebate will release the financial pressure from the fishermen. It will further ensure the continuity of viability of small-scale fishermen.

The reduction in the fuel prices works as a significant move by the government of Saint Lucia to regulate the expenses for fishing vessels. The rebate provides a relief to the vessel owners by compensating them their fuel expenditure.

In order to balance the high cost of fuel, the government is currently increasing the number of Fishing Aggravating Devices (FADS). In this regard, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development- Alfred Prospere, said that the increased rebates came into existence on August 2, 2023.

The key initiative of the government is to expand the Fishing Aggravating Devices (FADS). These FADS are the crucial steps that played a pivotal role in reducing fuel costs for fishermen, offering an efficient alternative to deep-sea fishing.

Under this project, ten additional FADS were installed under the World Bank project. Minister Prospere expected and hopes a significant reductions in fuel consumption, which will benefit the fishing communities.

Additionally, such initiatives and projects reflect the unwavering commitment and dedication of the government of Saint Lucia in providing sustainable livelihood and fostering fishing as a financially rewarding to the country.

Even Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has always been active in such projects and works for the overall development of the country. He and his government expressed his commitment to work continuously for the benefit of their people.
