Georgetown, Guyana: President of the Republic of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, called the launch of the construction of the Berbice Stadium Multipurpose Facility another transformational moment in Guyanese history. He said that the venue, when completed, would aid in the further development of Berbice, which is being transformed through revolutionary projects by the current administration.
As per the official update, the stadium at Palmyra, East Berbice Corentyne, which will host cricket, other sport, entertainment events and conferences, will have a seating capacity for approximately 10,000 spectators. During his address, the President spoke of a number of developmental plans for the region in health, agriculture and infrastructure, including the possibility of a high-rise bridge.
He also expressed profound gratitude to development partners for the Stadium project, Exxon Mobil, CNOOC and HESS, through the Greater Guyana Initiative, and Owen Steel while lauding the “strong partnerships” through which the government is able to deliver more to the people.
The government of Guyana stated that following the launch, President Ali and the partners planted trees to commemorate the event while they unveiled the design of the stadium. Present at the significant event was the Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, other members of the cabinet, members of the Diplomatic Corps, development partners, several of Guyana’s cricket stars (current and former), and thousands of region Six residents.
Earlier, President Ali and members of his cabinet interacted with students and teachers from the Friends Primary School on the East Bank of Berbice at the Office of the President of Guyana on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.
The official post informed that the teachers and students were on a tour of the Office when they were given an opportunity to meet the President and his ministers in the cabinet room. Later in the day, the President and several of his Ministers also met with students and teachers from the Lochaber Primary School, Region Six.
