Dominica to re-open school doors soon on a phased approach: PM Skerrit

Roseau, Dominica: During the Sunday episode of Annou Pale, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit made several significant announcements, where he hinted that the face-to-face learning would soon be returned, using a phased approach. He added the Cabinet this week would introduce a set of COVID-19 instructions to re-open the school premises, which are being made considering the population, classroom size, and recreation space in the school.

The primary schools with a smaller population and adequate classroom space will conduct offline classes from 9 am to 1 pm, three days a week (Monday – Wednesday), under the proper COVID guidelines. Meanwhile, online sessions for primary school students will take place on Thursdays and Fridays.

For the primary schools with the medium size adequate space, for grades K to three, to attend face-to-face sessions from (Monday to Wednesday), whereas students of grades 4th to 6th will attend offline classes on Thursdays and Fridays.

On the other hand, for the large space primary schools, students of grades three-five and six will attend face-to-face sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays, while students of grades k to two will be attending the offline classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The students of grades 4th to 6th will attend the offline classes on Fridays only.

PM Skerrit added that special provisions had been made for the Saint Martin Primary school. At the secondary level, the students will be permitted to attend the face-to-face classes one day a week, 8 am to 1 pm.

Dominica grammar school, the Goodwill secondary school and the Guru Secondary school will also operate a morning shift.

“We must also focus on a child’s emotional and social skills, as well as their mental health so that students get a safer and compelling environment to develop their social and cognitive skills,” PM Skerrit stated.

Praising the efforts of the teachers and the other school staff, PM Skerrit stated, “This COVID pandemic continues to underscore the significance of teachers in our society. I take this opportunity to sincerely commend our teachers and principals for their efforts in the past months to ensure that our children remain engaged; we are fully aware of the pressures they face as they strive to keep the students interested, which indeed has not been an easy task”.

He further informed that government is in talks with several sports organisations to consider advice for resumption of the sporting events or group sporting activities, which will be concluded at the end of January.

Although, the green signal has been given to conduct a second OECS eastern Caribbean central bank netball tournament, which was earlier to take place the previous year in the month of November, but eventually was postponed by the government amid the COVID-19 outbreak. This event is the responsibility of the Dominica Network Association, which will be conducted from February 10 to 18, 2022, at the forecast of the Windsor Park stadium.

This is indeed a positive move for Dominica“, the prime minister cited while urging everybody to make this tournament a massive success.
