Dominica: Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit visited the Chinese Embassy and signed the condolence book to pay his respects to the former Chinese leader, Jiang Zemin, on Friday. Zemin passed on Wednesday.
Prime Minister extended grief on behalf of the people and the Government of Dominica to President of China Xi Jinping, his bereaved family and the Chinese people. He was accompanied by his wife and Parliamentary Secretary of Roseau Central, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit and Dominica’s Ambassador to China, Martin Charles.
As per the reports by the Chinese state media, former Chinese President Jiang Zemin passed away at the age of 91. Jiang is remembered as a reformer and a leader who helped the country transition to a market economy. He was in office as president from 1993 to 2003, overseeing economic liberalization and growth, as well as a period of political stability.
During his tenure, Jiang is credited with helping to modernize China’s infrastructure, as well as reforming its education system. He was also a major proponent of Chinese foreign policy, advocating for closer ties with the United States and a stronger role for China in the international community.
The diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of Dominica and China have seen much progress in recent years. As of 2019, both countries have established embassies in each other’s capitals and maintain a strong economic, political and cultural partnership.
The two countries have developed a comprehensive strategic partnership that has seen them cooperate on a number of fronts such as trade, development, investment and technology. In 2009, Dominica became the first Caribbean country to recognize the “One China” policy, and its relationship with China has become increasingly important as the two countries strive for shared goals.
In recent years, Dominica has sought to foster closer economic ties with China, and has actively sought out investments from Chinese companies.
