Canadian Prime Minister pledges to provide assistance worth US$39 million to Haiti

Port-au-Prince: The most-impoverished island country of the Caribbean region will be receiving help of millions of dollars from the government of Canada. This money donation will assist the Haitian government in security and numerous other significant projects.

The announcement was made by the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after a three-hour meeting, where the foreign ministers of several other countries were also present, including the United States, France and Mexico.

Where on the one hand, Canadian government pledged to donate US$39 million, the other countries assured that safe and fair elections would be conducted in Haiti by strengthening the island’s security.

The representatives from the United Nations also attended the virtual meeting. The attendees also expressed their concern about the rising turmoil and political instability in the Caribbean island country since President Jovenel Moise was assassinated on July 7, 2021, at his residence in the capital city of Haiti.

Addressing and announcing the high-government officials, the Canadian Prime Minister asserted, “The increase in violence is only aggravating the already precarious humanitarian situation. We need to work together to restore stability and to safeguard the safety and well-being of the citizens of Haiti”.

Moreover, the foreign minister leaders present in the conference have also pledged to foster the Haitian National Police to assist the force in fighting the soaring gang violence, drug trafficking, murders, and other criminal activities.

The situation of Haiti is getting worse day by day. The general elections on the island have been postponed thrice. Recently, Prime Minister Ariel Henry cleared the rumours of his tenure ending, noting, “My tenure is not ending on February 7, 2022, and the government ensures to conduct free and democratic elections. The next tenant of the National Palace will be a president freely elected by all the Haitian people”.

He further tweeted, “My government is, more than ever, determined to bring the investigation into the assassination of President Jovenel Moise to a successful conclusion. The people responsible and sponsors of this egregious crime must be prosecuted and punished”.
