Antigua and Barbuda’s oldest resident passes away at 106

A 106-year-old resident of Antigua and Barbuda by the name of Gladys Delores Hodge, who was also the nation’s oldest resident, passed away on Wednesday and is being mourned by many in the Caribbean nation.

A 106-year-old resident of Antigua and Barbuda by the name of Gladys Delores Hodge, who was also the nation’s oldest resident, passed away on Wednesday and is being mourned by many in the Caribbean nation.

Gladys Delores Hodge has been described as having a fun-loving personality and brightened the lives of all the people who came in contact with her. She is said to have been a great influence on her community and the perfect example of someone that lived long and well, becoming an inspiration for many in the process.

The Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division of Antigua and Barbuda, paid its respects to Hodge and issued the following statement, “We wish to express condolences to the family in this time of bereavement. Gladys was a very jovial, kind, loving and Godfearing woman and was also the mother of five.”

“Many would often wonder what is her secret to longevity. Well for her, her favourite food according to her youngest son Fitzroy Lake, were rice and chicken, and soup and her faith in God.”

The news of Hodge’s death has reached people in every corner of Antigua and Barbuda, to the point where she was brought up at the latest cabinet meeting as well.

Hodge hails from a region which is under the leadership of the Minister of Information, Melford Nicholas and the entire cabinet sent its condolences to the aggrieved, who reside in the St John’s City East constituency.

The passing of such a lively and inspirational character is always a saddening event but Gladys Delores Hodge and her story has made its way into the hearts and minds of the entire nation of Antigua and Barbuda, resonating with young and old citizens alike.
